There are some major improvements both on the inside and out of the file now:
+All the sound has been remastered and additional effects to the audio is bettered timed with what's on the screen.
+Lip-snching issues have been fixed.
+Optimization of the audio has taken away approx. 1.3 MB away from the original file size.
+Over 50 symbols have been re-drawn for quality.
+Coding for subtitles has been tweeked and is now more user friendly. The zones are now better defined and the text will immediately vanish as soon as the mouse leaves the subtitle bar.
+New voice actor for Trish from a personal internet buddy of mine, BristishMyVoice (brisithmyvoice.deviantart.com). Her similar age and natural attitude really helped me develop Trisha into a better character.
+New audio tracks by Lunacatz. The additional lines add a narrative to Pick Up from Hick's POV. Altogether, this will help set up the story for Pick Up: Act Two.
Ver. 2 will replace the file I had on Newgrounds but the original version of Pick Up will still be available on this deviantart account.
i like it, although i gotta say, the music video version is better
the voice-overs from Hickory, setting the story, are a nice touch, although i didn't like how scratchy it sounded (i do realize it's supposed to sound like a recording. but that doesn't mean i should like it! ) and how invasive it was. the music was nearly absent in the movie, only audible at a very low volume, very scarcely.
on a more positive note, Trisha's new voice actor is definitely a better part of this. she's a good actor, conveying emotion very well, and at just the right volume (although her "JERK!" wasn't quite as loud as i expected).
i did like the subtle irony at the beginning where Hickory's voice-over was saying the she's handling it as delicately as she could, just as her scout violently destroyed the tree Pat was hiding behind.
however, i didn't notice any of your re-drawings. maybe it's because i haven't seen the original Pick Up in a while to be able to tell the difference, though, so don't get hung up on this comment, if you're that sensitive to criticism : P
Not really, I really appreciate the in-depth review.
Pick Up originally was planned to be a music video like all my other animations. It was only until I was about 80% done did I get the sudden idea to add SFX and a voice track--and make the animation more of an actual movie. I feel like what I ended up with was better than either idea: an engaging movie with sound effects and great actors but also with music that isn't there just to be background music. All three parts of the audio equally make this work one of the best I've done yet.
The main problem that I was hearing from quite a few reviewers on NG was that the music was way--way--Way too loud (you couldn't even hear the dialouge in the very last scene). The music track was overpowering all the others, so I toned it down a bit and made the audio as a whole more balanced.
*never heard of the word invasive before. : P Thank you, dictionary.com. Heheh.
Hmmm... yar, I do certainly believed I lucked out on meeting Trisha's new voice actor. She's a really cool person and the match between actor vs. character is much more natural. Mandiiv, the previous VA for Trisha, did a good job too, which is one of the reasons why I'm still leaving the older version here on DA to pay homage to her work.
As for the re-draws, mainly, there were just a bunch of symbols that I personally believed were nasty or that I found ways to draw better. For example, when hick talks in the final scenes, the inside of her mouth changes color from a dark pink to a completely different symbol that had a linear fill for the inside of the mouth instead. Or sometimes a pair of legs wouldn't be long enough, or were too squiggly, etc. They aren't really noticeable as much as they were just an annoyance to me. I really didn't want to go and fix everything or else there would be no indication of how much I improved with Taste of Snow comes out later on this year.
I appreciate the love, Rammy. Expect a ring soon. <3
Yeah, Blue Box is a delivery service that ships evil weapons to evil people and that guy accidently got a package from them. Hick's job is to get the swords back and to their proper place.
